MMSS
July 15th, 2008 by DJBruce So I just got back from the Michigan Math and Science Scholars camp. It was a really cool camp. I loved spending two weeks studying physics and just being on my own.
So in the two weeks we spent most of the time studying basic Newtonian physics. We cover topics including:
-Acceleration due to gravity
- Different equations covering velocity and distance
- Conservation of Energy
- Centripetal Acceleration
We were also did quite a few experiments. Including analyzing acceleration using photo-gates, attempting to hit a target with a rocket, and analzing things using video point. At the end of the week we went to Cedar Point and collected data using accelerometers, barometers, and GPS units. After collecting all this data we spent time analzing it and preparing a presentation to give.
We also where given tours of many of the labs at the University of Michigan. We got to see there laser labs studying rubudium. We saw there nuclear research labs. There we say there labs studying plasma and there particle accelerator. We also had a graduate student helping are class who had, had a internship at CERN. It was really cool to talk to him and listen to his advice and stories about his journey through physics.
I loved this program Professor Dave Winn PhD. was an amazing teacher and I loved how much we learned in such a short time. I just wish it was longer and went more in depth in how all the equations where derived. I would recommend this camp to any person interested in math or science.
