Sorry about the lack of many posts recently, hopefully the reasons for this will become clear over the next few blog posts.
I thought I’d restart my blogging with a brief discussion of some events recently. I’m sorry about the lack of science content here but a big chunk of the physics is commercially sensitive so I cannot talk about it.
I recently spent some time working on an industry lead project which required me to conduct some experiments on a new sample. We thought that we knew what was causing the effects we were observing and wanted to conduct some more experiments to try and prove this.
We thought using a piece of experimental apparatus that hasn’t been greatly utilised in our field but we thought it’d give us the information we needed.
So I conducted the experiments, they looked a little weird, and seemed something similar to what I expected. But it occurred to me that the experiment could be used to probe an energy plane of a momentum-energy space for a type of structure. I was completely unaware of this having ever been conducted before. Subsequent investigation couldn’t find it.
A few days later a friend was talking to me and started explaining an idea he’d had for an experiment that morning which I finished explaining. A really nice example of ideas appearing completely separate to each other in a very short space of time.
We decided to run a quick test of the set up and showed that the method would work and presented the idea to our superiors, they loved the idea. I don’t have the time for the project but the other guy and the person whose experimental set up it is does and we’re now finishing up writing the paper, a really great few weeks. It reminded me of why I enjoyed science, we had an experimental idea, it works, modelling fits amazingly well, people worked together and it all fits… Very very nice project.
