Help! I’m trying to find a decent chemistry set for a college aged friend of mine, who’s into science and home experimentation, but isn’t a chem major, per se.
I’ve looked through United Nuclear, but their stuff seems mostly sold on a individual/unit basis. This would be good, but I don’t have a particular experiment in mind for him. If I bought him a bunch of random chemicals, the price would probably start to rack up, and he wouldn’t necessarily have a use for them.
Obviously, chemistry sets tend to suck these days, due to the wars on drugs/terror/curiosity, so alternative science-y gift ideas are appreciated.

Or, lack thereof. Interesting but not too surprising, considering how closely diet is tied to diabetes. This doesn’t rule out genetic predisposition, but does mean that there’s probably no ‘magic bullet’ cure for diabetes. You are what you eat, afterall.

Apparently these scientists have been turning Tequilla into diamonds. No, really. Apparantly, Mexican scientists have found another use for their most exported beverage. Anyone want to explain how they do it? I’ll buy a round for the first/best explanation.

Tomorrow is my first interview for MD/PhD school. Or, rather, tomorrow tuesday and wednesday are interveiw times. Why any school thinks their interveiws should take three days, I don’t know, but I’m not going to enjoy making up the class time I’m going to miss. Still, you have to put your priorities in perspective… I could be spending the next 8 years of my life at this school, so better see what its really like now, than be suprised when its too late.
