That which we call a rose<br \/>\nBy any other name would smell as sweet.<\/em><br \/>\n \t         &#8211;  Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2) <\/p>\n<p><strong>We live in a world of euphemisms<\/strong> &#8212; words or phrases respun to make them sound less offensive. <\/p>\n<p>Fried food bad? Change the name to <em>KFC<\/em>. Nobody\u2019ll remember that it stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Big Mac\u2019s are selling, but fried chicken not so much? Call it <em>crispy chicken<\/em>. What\u2019s the difference? Ah, none. <\/p>\n<p>Filthy rich? Nasty label. (Wish I was one.) The Republican term is <em>job creators<\/em>. God forbid we raise taxes on job creators. Oh, excuse me, taxes is also an ugly word. So Democrats refer to them as <em>revenue enhancements<\/em>. My ever shrinking wallet must be enhancing somebody\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n<p>If I die in the hospital, it\u2019s a <em>negative patient care outcome<\/em>. Has such a lovely ring to it.  Oh really? I\u2019m still dead! A toilet is a <em>rest room<\/em>. When\u2019s the last time you took a nap in one. (Don\u2019t tell me, I don\u2019t want to know.) <\/p>\n<p>Even science has joined the club. Global warming? Too controversial. Proselytized by Al Gore &#8212; must be another big-government conspiracy. Let\u2019s call it <em>climate change<\/em>. So much better. As though nature cares what we call it. The science still works the same. (Which is too bad for us, because we don\u2019t seem to be doing much about it.)<\/p>\n<p>I think I\u2019ll put on my <em>personal flotation device<\/em>, get my <em>full-figured body <\/em>into my <em>previously-owned vehicle<\/em>, and drive off into the sunset! <\/p>\n<p>Marksmodernphysics.com <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ira Mark Egdall What&#8217;s in a name?
