Naturally, the discussion of \u201ccloaking\u201d has again brought out references to \u201cHarry Potter cloaks\u201d and other dramatic imagery; the reality is much more mundane, but still fascinating \u2014 and an amazing achievement.  Let\u2019s take a look at what was done, what was not done \u2014 and why it\u2019s quite cool!<\/p>\n<p>First, let\u2019s get rid of some misconceptions that the terminology naturally brings to mind.  The terms \u201cspace-time cloak\u201d and \u201chistory editor\u201d make it sound like the device is ripping a hole in the fabric of space-time itself \u2014 like a time machine equipped with a big eraser!  This is definitely not what is happening here!  There is no manipulation of time itself, but rather a manipulation of a beam of light to hide something that the light would otherwise detect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An analogy for what this <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> is a strobe light.  A strobe can freeze our perception of motion, but not the motion itself \u2014 you just aren&#8217;t getting that information.
