{"id":1105,"date":"2008-12-11T09:00:14","date_gmt":"2008-12-11T14:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/?p=1105"},"modified":"2008-12-11T09:00:14","modified_gmt":"2008-12-11T14:00:14","slug":"great-news-for-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/archives\/1105","title":{"rendered":"Great News for Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just heard about Steve Chu being nominated for Energy Secretary, and see that I&#8217;m late to the party (<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2008\/12\/change_physicists_can_believe.php\">Uncertain Principles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2008\/12\/10\/steven-chu-nominated-to-be-secretary-of-energy\/\">Cosmic Variance<\/a>, and elsewhere in the blogohedron, I&#8217;m sure)<\/p>\n<p>(As with Chad and Sean, I&#8217;ve met him; we sat next to each other at dinner one evening at the Frequency Standards and Metrology Symposium at St. Andrews in 2001.)<\/p>\n<p>Having someone who, along with being a Nobel laureate, has the pedigree of running a national lab <em>and<\/em> someone with actual experience doing lab experiments is a fantastic thing.  This is not someone who is being appointed under the sort of &#8220;he ran the FAA, so he can certainly run Energy&#8221; career-bureaucrat mentality.
