I’ve seen a discussion of the lifeguard dilemma before, but there’s some added value here. Especially the disavowal of the “dog doing calculus” bit<\/p>\n
Tim was impressed enough by Elvis\u2019s trick to write a paper called \u201cDo Dogs Know Calculus?\u201d In it he reassures the reader that \u201cElvis does not know calculus\u2026In fact,\u201d Tim adds, \u201che has trouble differentiating even simple polynomials. More seriously, although he does not do the calculations, Elvis\u2019s behavior is an example of the uncanny way in which nature often finds optimal solutions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
