{"id":5741,"date":"2010-06-16T03:00:08","date_gmt":"2010-06-16T08:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/?p=5741"},"modified":"2010-06-16T03:00:08","modified_gmt":"2010-06-16T08:00:08","slug":"bed-banana-equivalent-dose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/archives\/5741","title":{"rendered":"The Banana Equivalent Dose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve used bananas as examples of radiation sources before, in terms of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/archives\/2922\">equivalent dose<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/archives\/650\">knee-jerk reaction<\/a> to the mention of &#8220;radiation&#8221; in news stories.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it turns out that the <em>banana equivalent dose<\/em> is a more common unit for dose comparisons than I had suspected \u2014 it even has its <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Banana_equivalent_dose\">own wikipedia page<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The average radiologic profile of bananas is 3520 picocuries per kg, or roughly 520 picocuries per 150g banana.[3] The equivalent dose for 365 bananas (one per day for a year) is 3.6 millirems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I had given the radiation level for a banana as about 300 picocuries, so obviously I was estimating the banana as being 80 &#8211; 100 g, rather than the 150 g used here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve used bananas as examples of radiation sources before, in terms of equivalent dose and the knee-jerk reaction to the mention of &#8220;radiation&#8221; in news stories.
