They are supposed to be used to transport equipment \u2014 the whole reason there are wheels involved \u2014 but they often turn into squatters.  They take up residence next to an experiment for an extended period of time, often hosting some equipment that&#8217;s also supposed to be temporary, such as an oscilloscope, and become the equivalent of a mobile home in a trailer park:  Mobile only in name.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why we got a couple of new carts. To four digits, at least.<\/p>\n<p>The bulkiness of our electric drill\/screwdriver meant that the casters blocked access to the screw-holes.  I&#8217;m not sure who originally said <em>If necessity is the mother of invention, then laziness must be its father<\/em>, but I didn&#8217;t see any reason to tighten 32 big screws by hand, so I kludged this together with help from a few pieces from our socket-wrench set<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/files\/2011\/06\/screw-drill-kludge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/files\/2011\/06\/screw-drill-kludge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"379\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8917\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/06\/screw-drill-kludge.jpg 576w, http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/06\/screw-drill-kludge-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now we can race the carts around the hallway, until someone loads them up.
