{"id":9053,"date":"2011-06-24T03:00:28","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T08:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/?p=9053"},"modified":"2011-06-24T03:00:28","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T08:00:28","slug":"you-see-what-your-knowledge-tells-you-youre-seeing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.scienceforums.net\/swansont\/archives\/9053","title":{"rendered":"You See What Your Knowledge Tells You You\u2019re Seeing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/22\/but-it-doesn\u2019t-move\/\">But it doesn\u2019t move!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another take on one of my favorite passages from James Burke&#8217;s intro to <em>The Day the Universe Changed<\/em>, which goes like this<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Somebody apparently once went up the the great philosopher Wittgenstein and said \u201cWhat a lot of morons people back in the Middle Ages must have been to have looked every morning at what\u2019s going on behind me now, the dawn, and to have thought that what they were seeing was the sun going around the Earth, when as every schoolkid knows the Earth goes around the sun and it doesn\u2019t take too many brains to understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To which Wittgenstein replied, \u201cYeah, but I wonder what it would have looked like if the Sun had been going around the Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Point being, of course, is that it would have looked exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p>You see what your knowledge tells you you\u2019re seeing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>But it doesn\u2019t move!
