Is a Science Ph.D. a Waste of Time?
Refreshing to read a piece on this subject that doesn’t simply assume that a non-academic career equates to failure, and acknowledges that one might pursue an advanced degree for reasons other than a fatter paycheck.
An industrial PhD seeking promotion rather than fungibility requires frat boy certification – an MBA. A doctorate is a badge of authority not a skill set. Avoid being shot by directing the shootings. Management is about process not product. Management buys other production then fires the producers, DCF/ROI. Those chained to the oars drown in heavy seas. The huge bald fat guy banging the big drum has a flotation device.
“doctorates last a lifetime” Mothers suckling their infants are arrested for public obscenity. Build a garage playground and see how long you last against jackbooted State compassion “following orders.” Uncle Al says, “a soldering gun is a gun.”
Anyway, I agree it’s a nice piece. Thanks for pointing it out.
