  1. A quilt is usually made of two layers of fabric (the top one is often very interesting) that are stitched toeach other with a layer of “batting” in between. The batting is fluffy stuff, often cotton. The lines of stitching are usually pretty close together so the batting doesn’t move around. A duvet is usually less stitched together than a quilt, with bigger spaces between the lines of stitching, because it often has down instead of batting. But some duvets have batting. The down IS allowed to be moved around, to adjust which parts of the duvet keep you warmer and which allow you to be cooler.
I think duvets are more “European” and quilts are more “American.” Also, quilts are often folk-art, hand made and unique, while duvets are usually just things you buy at Bed Bath and Beyond or maybe Macy’s.
A duvet cover is put over the duvet like a giant pillowcase over a very wide and flat giant pillow. It keeps the duvet clean (it is expensive to clean a down-containing duvet) and you can wash it weekly like you would sheets and then you don’t need a top sheet.
