Reflecting on a new generation of mirrors
Hicks, a mathematician at Drexel University, Philadelphia, used computer algorithms to generate the mirror’s bizarre surface, which curves and bends in different directions. The curves direct rays from an object across the mirror’s face before sending them back to the viewer, flipping the conventional mirror image.
“Reflection in the mirror” in the above example is not a reflection of the panorama being “reflected”. It’s New Scientist spin, smoke, and… mirrors.
New Scientist spin aside, I’ve seen articles about the mirror work from this guy in a number of publications now. I don’t really understand how he crafts these mirrors though… this particular series mentioned coatings on the mirrors, so how does that un-flip images?
