I most certainly recognise what he says about high school students. I don’t know whether new media caused it, but my sixteen-year-olds, as a rule, don’t see the link between doing excercises and passing tests. They also don’t see how physics will ever be of any value in their lives. It’s most frustrating.
Wow! Thanks for this. I’ll probably show it at a faculty meeting of grumpy old people who’re having an increasingly difficult time understanding our (college level) students.
The resulting problem is, however, how to deal with it. Do we roll over and give up, or spend the rest of our (future-oriented) lives trying to understand an almost completely alien world?
