Where Does a 728-Ton Gorilla Sit?

21 July, 2008 (03:58) | Physics, Tech

By gorilla, of course, I mean inverted pendulum. The answer is: anywhere it wants in the middle of a tall building.

It’s a tuned mass damper for stabilizing the Taipei 101 skyscraper, and the link includes a video taken during the May earthquake.

I wonder what the ball is made of, probably just some standard steel alloy though. A tungsten ball of that mass has a radius of ~2m, which would be quite a bit smaller and more impractical, but it would be pretty damn awesome just to have that amount of tungsten somewhere on display. :p
