We're Gonna Need a Bigger Monitor

Solar System to scale

This page shows a scale model of the solar system, shrunken down to the point where the Sun, normally more than eight hundred thousand miles across, is the size you see it here. The planets are shown in corresponding scale. Unlike most models, which are compressed for viewing convenience, the planets here are also shown at their true-to-scale average distances from the Sun. That makes this page rather large – on an ordinary 72 dpi monitor it’s just over half a mile wide, making it possibly one of the largest pages on the web.

  1. Possibly one of the coolest websites ever. A little more than half a mile wide – rofl.

Hopefully, the next one includes Alpha Centauri, and the web page will be about 3,500 miles wide at the same scale (a website as wide as the Atlantic Ocean at some points).

  2. or they could just scale the entire solar system down to about the size of a decimal point and THEN show a few nearby stars

  3. Had to make a solar system to scale in high school, remember seeing this website (or one like it can’t remember) at the time. What they need to add here is a floating java window with a small map that shows you where you are in your solar system exploration trip 😛 … or some other aid

  4. Very funny. I found Pluto right away (just move to the right end), but I failed to even find Jupiter except for that little flash that was at one point visible while slowly moving the horizontal slider. After 2 minutes I lost patience and drew my conclusion: Earth and the other planets (not Pluto ain’t a planet anymore) are hidden behind the monstrous dark star that is going to destroy us next week. All a crazy conspiracy!
