Kids, Don't Try This … Anywhere

Kids Playing With Laser Pointers May Be Aiming for Eye Trouble

Sadly, this is too common, and this is just the latest incident.

He told doctors that he purchased the laser pointer so that he could pop balloons from a distance, burn holes in paper cards and burn holes in his sister’s sneakers.

Schmid said the boy wasn’t sure if the laser was dangerous, and he definitely didn’t know it could cause immediate eye injury.

I have a hard time connecting these two statements. Knows it would burn holes in things, but didn’t know it was dangerous.

  1. Holding two blatantly contradictory statements within one’s mind absent conflict is called “orthodoxy.” One need not site religion or socialism for particularly egregious examples. Physics will do,

    1) Neutrinos are observed 100% left-handed (spin antiparallel to velocity). Antineutrinos are observed 100% right-handed (spin parallel to velocity). (Neutrinos and antineutrinos were Officially racemic through Christmas 1956. A pair of piss-ants named Yang and Lee insubordinately observed cobalt-60 beta-decay by New Year’s Day 1957, proving Official Truth wrong.)

    2) Massed neutrinos must be Majorana particles, by theory. They must then be their own antiparticles. Neutrino mass is validated by observing neutrino flavor oscillation during travel. That they are their own antiparticles is validated by observing neutrinoless double beta-decay while staying at home.

    (1) or (2) is OK. (1) plus (2) both being true is ridiculous. But wait! The see-saw mechanism! You can unstick your peanut butter-slathered mouth by adding slow-set mixed epoxy glue.

  2. I hate people like this kid who ruin things for everyone. he is like someone who thinks that a M80 is completely safe while knowing that it is 1/4 of a stick of dynamite! THINGS DON’T NEED TO BE SAFE as long as you know what your doing! you don’t need a PhD to know that a BURNING (ie class IV) laser is dangerous anymore than you to know a lighter is dangerous!
if it starts things on fire than the energy that is transfered must be approximately equal to a normal lighter. WOULD YOU TAKE A FREAKING LIGHTER TO YOUR EYE!?!?
    sry i’m yelling again.
i’m so sick of overprotective whips and stupid kids with potentially dangerous (to the stupid) ruining things for hobby scientists (like myself) in the same age group.
    but I digress

  3. i’d like to apologies for my previous post. lasers (and many other things) are dangerous when handled incorrectly. immature people often handle things incorrectly.
    many “children” are immature.
these facts add up to making these things inaccessible to children.
rather than educating children on these things or just teaching them a little old fashioned common sense.
the fact is you can’t say all children any more than you can say all of any religious group, ethnicity or gender. also note how it says that kids would figure out how to strengthen normal lasers.
this can happen because intelligence and common sense are not the same.
I assume that this kid would have also have jumped off his roof had his superman costume not said “do not attempt to fly” but there those that look at that same text and think “duh”
