Truth in Advertising. Please.

A modest proposal

It is illegal to make false claims in a TV or radio commercial unless you are running for political office.

If you’re selling toothpaste, your claims must be vetted by legal and medical professionals. But not if you’re selling a candidate.

If you’re selling a candidate, not only can you lie about his record, but more to the point, you can lie about his opponent.

Not a bad idea — forcing candidates airing political ads to substantiate their claims. We’d get rid of the “my opponent molests collies” ads. (Unless your opponent is Judge Smails and Ty Webb has some real proof)

  1. A nice idea, but enforcing it may be dificult without violating their First Ammendment rights, which pertain to political speech. Perhaps it would be a better option to make a website that tracks every lie every candidate has made.

  2. I don’t think you should (or do) have the right to lie. That’s not something that should be protected speech.

We do have websites that track lies, but if people don’t pay attention to them, then they don’t do any good. People remember the lie, and what’s more, many will remember it as if it were the truth, even if it is later debunked.
